Lamming Miniatures

25mm ECW

review by Nick Nascati

First of all, let me say that it is indeed comforting to see a maker of historical miniatures coming back into the business.

The figures I received, 3 pikemen and 2 mounted officers, are meant to be soldiers of the New Model Army of Fairfax and Cromwell. Taken as basic troop types of the mid-17th century, they are quite good, but they fall short of the mark for the New Model.

The 3 pikemen all wear nicely detailed back and breast plates with morions, with 1 of the 3 figures also having tassets, thus classing him as slightly heavier than the other 2. The morions are well done, but sport large plumes, very unlike the New Model. Their coats are a bit too short and well fitted, asthe New Model seemed towear coats that were longer, and more in the style of the later 17th century. Each figure also comes with a seprate pike and infantry sword.

The cavalry have several problems. Both figures appear to be dwarves, from the length of their legs, and both suffer from right arms that are too short. Detail on the figures however is good. Both come with separate pistols, swords and holsters. The mounted infantry officer wears the typical broad brimmed hat with plumes and has longish hair and a moustache. The cavalry officer has the best representation of an ECW period lobster pot I have seen. The triple bars are well and cleanly molded, and away from the fully detailed face behind them. The horses are, quite simply, terrible. They are small, stiff and awkward, looking more like dragoon nags than heavy cavalry horses.

The figures have a slight stockiness about them that improves their ability to mix with other 25mm figures. They will look fine with Mini-Figs, Rai Partha, and possibly even with Essex and Hinchliffe.(though they are definitely smaller than these). The casting quality is quite good and the figures should present no problem to the novice painter, while being quite well detailed for the more experienced painter.

Overall, I would recommend these figures, given my reservations about certain details, however, I would suggest that anyone using these figures look for another source of cavalry horses to replace theirs.

Lamming Miniatures are presently available in the U.S. from MODELER'S MART, 2071 Range Road, Clearwater, Florida 33757.
