CBS TV has poured $80 million into many movies for their stations. Later they will show them in Europe in movie houses. Too many to list here, but you may be interested in Alister Mclean's THE HOSTAGE TOWER where terrorists capture the Eiffel Tower. PLAYING FOR TIME is already getting publicity with the controversial casting of Vanessa Redgrave as an Auschwitz survivor. Then there is GAUGIN THE SAVAGE starring David Carradine. The CONAN movie has started. The first film will deal with his young life and from the storyboard should be great. ALIEN may be as terrible as I believe.

When President Carter showed the movie recently, Mrs Carter left half way through but the President and 12 year old Amy saw it through to the end. CLASH OF TITANS is being filmed, all the live action will be done this winter. The Ray Harry hausen special effects will take years and it will not be released until Xmas 81. While the movie stars Ursula Andress, Maggie Smith, Lawrence Olivier and Burgess Mere dith, the film is studded with such things as Pegasas the winged horse, a two-headed wolf, a gorgon and the giant Kraken by the same people who did the Sinbad series of films. It is based on the Greek story of Perseus and Andromeda.

INCHON, starring Lawrence Olivier as Gen. MacArthur has been filmed and is now being edited. Major battle scenes include the landing by members of 16 dif ferent countries, the blowing up of the Han River Bridge and the battle for Osan bv the US 24th Inf Div, cost was S18 million. Arthur C. Clarke's novel DOLPHIN ISLAND has been picked up for a future movie in 1980. An animated Star Wars spin-off is being prepared for TV. With the success of WIZARDS and LOTR, Ranken-Bass will now do an animated full-length version of Peter S Beagle's fantasy novel THE LAST UNICORN.

Riposte

Christopher Nelson writes regarding John Mansfield's Movie News: "I must say that he made a mistake regarding STAR WARS. According to Magnetic Video (which is wholly owned by Twentieth Century Fox) they will have a videocassette of STAR WARS at some time in the future."
