Retailer Discounts Reviewed

by Jay Hadley

One of the benefits to the wargamer in the past few years has been the increasing availability of figures in a number of hobby shops across the country. This availability has increased the popularity of table top wargaming, but at what price? The following table explains who gets what for the right of the gamer to buy his figures in the local hobby shop. Before reading this, however, keep in mind that these are the standard discounts for any manufacturing organization and everything you buy in a store is subject to these same discounts.

    Retail (hobby shop)receives 40% off
    Wholesaler receives 15% off
    Sales Representatives . . . receive 6% as a commission
If cash is paid within 10 to 30 days 2% off.
There is a chain store discount of 50% available in some instances.

If you have been counting along with me, the various middlemen could be collecting 63% of the buying dollar before the manufacturer gets his. The trade-off comes in volume if the plan works properly.

The widespread availability of figures in retail outlets seems to indicate that trade is booming. Figure manufacturers are doing better than ever. The advantages that accrue to the wargamer are quality of products, variety of products and easier access to products. This also enables businessmen to start gaming shops which can offer gamerc many services which were not available five years ago.

Price of Lead Down

Board Room Reports, a newsletter for manufacturing business managers reports that lead has dropped in price by 21% over the last few months and that a further drop is a distinct possibility. Hopefully this will help figure manufacturers to hold the line in prices even though everything else is going up.

This is reported in part from John Mansfield's SIGNAL with his kind permission. Signal is available for $3/12 issues: 46 Carleton St., Oromocto, N.B. Canada.
