Sabretache is a new e-magazine from Saga Publishing, covering the period following the Renaissance period up through the end of the 19th century. It downloads in pdf or html formats. The first issue has notes on military history attraction in Paris, an account of a game using They Died for Glory, a reprint of an article on smooth-bore musketry from its inception to the 19th century, an account of a playtest of Victorian Wars using a St Privat scenario, and editorials. $12.00 per year. A free download of the first issue is available. www.saga-publishing.com. Midwest Wargamer’s Association Newsletter is the heavyweight among wargaming magazines, now pushing 200 pages. It is filled with rule sets (20 mm WWII, Custer, hex-based WWII, War of 1812, and a TSATF variant in the Jan/Feb issue), reviews, battle reports, letters, rules discussions, modeling techniques, commentary, and, well, other stuff. The Jan/Mar issue is dominated by campaigns, with a report of a Bismark campaign, an Ancients campaign using Decimo rules, a proposed campaign based on the Forrester’s Rifleman Dodd, and a DBA-based campaign. There are also some sci-fi and fantasy games, in which category might be included one game centered on the Maus, an article on flying paper model aircraft, letters, and editorial. The May issue begins with an article that is not only beautifully illustrated, but includes a medieval crusader campaign and the tactical rules to go with it. There is also a history of Napoleon’s campaign in Egypt with orders of battle and uniform guides, a history of the AWI battles at Harlem Heights and Pell’s Point, a history of Philiphaugh (1645), a history and Crossfire scenario for Buna and Gona, the fourth part of an article on the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980’s, reviews and editorial. This issue also has an insert for Salute, with articles by participants and lots more pictures.
