This article comes from the German Report Series prepared by the Department of the Army at the end of World War II. The study was prepared by a group of former German generaIs and general staff officers. The principal author, who by the end of the war had attained the rank of Generaloberst (General), served on the Eastern Front throughout the Russian campaign and retreat into northern Germany. Keep in mind that the German Report Series was written by Germans from the German point of view in light of German combat doctrine and organization, and prejudices of the author. Having said that, the value of reports by actual participants should not be overlooked--just taken with a grain of salt.
