Custer Battalions

Company C, Captain (Brevet Colonel) Thomas W. Custer
Company E, 1st Lieutenant (Brevet Captain) Algernon E. Smith
Company F, Captain George W. Yates
Company I, Captain (Brevet Lieutenant Colonel) Myles W. Keogh
Company L.; 1st Lieutenant James Calhoun

On the day of battle, Custer appears to have split this formation into two smaller battalions, one, consisting of C and I Companies under Captain Keogh, whilst Yates led Companies E, F and L, with Tom Custer probably acting as aide to his brother, leaving the command of his company to Lieutenant Reno Battalion Major (Brevet Colonel) Marcus A. Reno

Benteen Battalion

Captain (Brevet Colonel) Frederick W. Benteen

Company D, Captain (Brevet Lieutenant Colonel) Thomas B. Weir

Pack Train

Captain Thomas M. McDougall
Company B, Captain T.M. Mathey
Reinforced by one N.C.O. and six privates from each company, plus civilian packers.

Total strength of Custer's column was 31 officers, 566 enlisted men, 35 Crow, Arikara and Sioux scouts, and about a dozen civilian guides and mule packers.

Each trooper carried 100 rounds of carbine and 24 rounds of revolver ammunition.
