Artillery and Standards

edited by Keith Frye

The Artillery

The Artillery wore a double-breasted dark blue tunic with black collar and cuffs piped yellow. The tunic had two rows of yellow metal buttons. Epaulettes may have been worn in the field, and these were of yellow metal with yellow fringe. Trousers were dark blue with a thin yellow side-stripe. Shoes were black leather. The waist belt was white. Cartridge belts were yellow, and cartridge pouches were black. Shako was black.

Gun carriages were painted light grey.

Standards

In 1848, the troops in service in Lombardy carried standards consisting of the white cross of Savoy on a red field with a blue border, displayed centrally on the traditional Italian tricolor of red, white and green. In the Crimea, the Savoy cross was bordered in escutcheon and surmounted with the Royal Crown of Sardinia
