Sardinian Expeditionary Force
1855-56

Cavalry

edited by Keith Frye

While there were six regiments of heavy cavalry on the Sardinian establishment, only a single regiment of lights were deployed to the Crimea.

The Light Cavalry wore a bluish-grey tunic with light blue collar and cuffs. Officers only occasionally wore the blue pelisse. The headdress was a low shako worn with a yellow waterproof cover. Trousers were bluish-grey with a double stripe of light blue.

Lances had a pennon of Savoy blue.

Officers had silver epaulettes and buttons, while other ranks had white metal buttons and fringe-less shoulder scales.

Belting for other ranks was white with black leather pouches. Swords were of steel-hilted pattern in steel scabbards. Officers had cross belts of blue leather with gilt furnishings and a narrow sash or waist-belt of Savoy blue with three silver lines.

Shabraques were deep blue with a black sheepskin, and with a white border for other ranks and a silver one for officers. A white monogram was displayed in the corner.
