This is the third volume of The Osprey - Squadron/Signal "Vanguard" series. The size and format are identical. The American First Division was not a specially recruited elite unit. It was, nevertheless, elite in its attitude and performance. It had tremendous esprit de corps built on its WWI record and reputation, its designation as "First," and on having a head-start in training over most of the other American divisions. Although technically organized the same as any other U.S. infantry division, it usually had even more non-divisional units attached to it than other divisions had. It also had more training and experience at amphibious landings than other Army divisions, except, possibly, the Third. This volume gives a brief history of the division's WWII service. It also lists the units attached during various periods. The eight color plates by Mike Chappell and numerous b & w photos provide considerable information on uniforms and equipment. It is an interesting and worthy addition to the series. It also sells for $5.95. More Book Review
