Book Review

French Napoleonic Artillery - by Michael Head

by Don Lowry

Another series that has been reviewed here before is Almark's Uniforms and Equipment (American Civil War Union Infantry Uniforms, in issue #82). This volume of this series, like that one, is 8 1/4" x 7 3/4" with 48 pages plus paper covers. Six pages of color plates plus numerous black and white drawings make up over half the book. The text is divided into three parts. Part 1 described "Artillery Equipment, 1804-1815" covering such items as the Gribeauval system guns, firing procedure, gun crew duties, battery composition, caissons, horses, etc. Part 2 is "Organization of Artillery Units," and Part 3 is "Artillery Uniforms." There are also three small appendices: "Imperial Livery," "Table of Equivalent Ranks" and "Artillery Standards." There are also tables showing the rank distinctions of officers and other ranks, and a glossary of terms. It sells for $4.95 and should be available at better hobby shops.
