Route 66:
A Vietnam Scenario 1969

American Briefing

by Steve Wilson

You are tasked with taking a routine convoy up Route 66 to Firebase Hotel. This is a 'milk run' and you aim to be at Hotel before dusk.

OOB & EQUIPMENT

You command a platoon of 3 rifle squads and a small HQ group. These are mounted in 3 APCs and a Jeep.

You have some hardened veterans but a high proportion of your men are 'FNGs new in country'. This applies to your NCOs and team leaders as well as the riflemen. Many have not been in combat before. Consequently, your platoon is average effectiveness and average morale.

Each APC carries extra ammo, all figures within 6" (mounted or dismounted) of their APC to fire at increased effect (the 'mad minute') once.

INTELLIGENCE

The region is generally friendly and the villagers pro government.

Your base does come under periodic mortar attacks and is bothered by the occasional sniper but generally the region is quiet.

You start on the road at the tables edge heading towards Firebase Hotel.

SUPPORT

Firebase Hotel has a battery of 105mm howitzers constantly on call.

The region is not authorised for the use of air support, although light recon aircraft are available.

Ville's may not be fired upon (or artillery strikes called in within 12") unless proven unfriendly.

VICTORY CONDITIONS

Who knows? You have your briefing, but bear in mind the following:

Your overriding loyalty is to your men.

ALL wounded Americans MUST be evacuated. The nearest medical facilities are at Firebase Hotel.

NO Americans, LIVING OR DEAD must be abandoned.

In any engagement only confirmed enemy casualties (the bodycount) in determining victory.

IF YOU PLAN TO PLAY THE AMERICANS, READ NO FURTHER!
