Route 66:
A Vietnam Scenario 1969

Introduction and Historical Background

by Steve Wilson

This scenario is set in an indeterminate area of Vietnam in early 1969. It does not set out to recreate a specific engagement but rather a `typical' action of the war. It requires an umpire and at least two players although three to four U.S players and two to three Vietnamese is probably ideal. It is playable in an evening (and could be expanded to fill an afternoon).

Each side has their own briefing, OOB and objectives (see below). The umpires notes follow after the briefings. There is a little preparatory work required of the umpire.

Umpires are encouraged to amend what follows to suit their own requirements (or style of play). Please note that the mechanics are little different from a `normal' wargame (whatever that is), I hope they provide you with an enjoyable game and a stimulating post game discussion.

If you plan to play the Americans then you should probably read no further,

EDITORS NOTE This style of game is touched on later in 'Tips for the Umpire' by Derek Henderson.

BACKGROUND

(This is common to both sides.)

Route 66 runs through the Song Tra Valley in South Vietnam. Pre war the route was little used, the area being a quiet agricultural region where the populace 'kept themselves to themselves'. With the coming of the Americans to this region Route 66 has taken on greater significance, principally as the main land route to the new Firebase Hotel.
