Parthian Briefing and OOB

by Ernest Mortimer

Once again Rome has invaded you. This time their forces are commanded by Marc Antony who has sworn to avenge Crassus. This invasion is well organised and in the initial encounters new Roman tactics gave them the advantage. Unable to defeat the Romans on the battlefield you have retreated. The Romans are now besieging the major city of Phraaspa, they are making slow progress due to lack of equipment and their supplies are running low. They have sent for reinforcements and siege equipment. If you can prevent this from reaching the city the Romans will have to retreat, giving you the chance to destroy them as they struggle home in winter. If this Roman column reaches Phraaspa it will probably fall. If this occurs your army may disband and go home (or worse - rebel against you!).

The siege train is escorted by a legion, supported by light auxilia (both horse and foot). Also present is a force of Armenian cavalry and infantry. The Armenians are at best dubious allies (you know -they used to be allied with you!) and it is doubtful that they will risk heavy casualties fighting for Rome -- they might even try and 'sit out' the battle, waiting for a chance to break off without losing too much face.

To succeed you must destroy as much of the enemy train as possible (prevent it exiting the table en route to Phraaspa). Be aware that if the Romans establish a defensive position around the Oasis they may be able to hold on until Antony can relieve them.

Your forces start on the Parthian table edge (except the levy foot who may start in the oasis). The enemy start on the opposite side between the road and the track.

It is very hot, in a prolonged engagement the Romans could suffer severely if they do not hold the Oasis.
