The Autumn Conference of the Napoleonic Association demonstrated the many and diverse research activities going on within the society. The Study Groups are flourishing and will be producing a series of uniform books (published by Partizan Press) and a series on campaigns of the period. Some of these Groups even produce their own newsletter, so it is well worth joining if your interests are covered by their activities. The meeting had two interesting papers; Eagles on the Danube was presented by Mike Hannon, who runs Grapeshot Tours. The talk looked at Napoleon's campaign against the Austrians in 1809, using pictures of the people, places and actions of that year, alongside modern photographs of the sites as they are today. As someone who has not studied this particular campaign, I found it a fascinating and informative lecture. Mike presents this material on his tour of the same name, and I got the impression that such tour is a relaxed affair (with plenty of good food and local beverages!) as well as an informative historical holiday. The Life Guards: The Enigma was presented by Colin Trench of the 1st Life Guards, using one of his troopers as a live visual aid to illustrate the uniform and equipment. Perhaps, with the diversity of different nationality units within the Napoleonic Association, future Speakers could make use of such people to illustrate their papers. The Dusty Archive
