Literary Awards

Last year twelve excellent volumes were submitted to the 1997 Literary Committee of the International Napoleonic Society for the annual prize. The INS is pleased to have announced that, as a result of the evaluations by the Committee, composed of David Chandler, Robert Holtmann, David Markham, Jeanne 0jala, John Severn and D.D.Horward, the following awards have been made:

First Prize of $2,500 has been awarded to Rory Muir for his volume Britain and the Defeat of Napoleon, published by the Yale University Press.

Second Prize of $1,500 was awarded to Michael Broers for his volume, Napoleonic Imperialism and the Savoy Monarchy 1773-1821, published by Edwin Mellon Press of Lewiston, New York.

The Academic Literary Awards are for the two best published articles written by graduate students. Prizes are $500 each. The Awards for 1997 were:

Llewellyn Cook for his published article Austrian Diplomacy: The Marriage of Marie Louise, and Harold Blanton for The Swiss Option: Allied Grand Strategy and Disharmony.

The INS states that each of these publications has met the rigorous criteria established by the Literary Committee, and they represent a significant contribution to the study of the Napoleonic period as exemplified by the quality of research, originality, style and analysis. In addition to these awards, the President of the International Napoleonic Society, Ben Weider, has instigated The Golden Laurel Award to give special recognition to one book each year that has made a unique contribution to the field of Napoleonic studies. This recognition includes a certificate and a cheque for $1,500. The 1997 Golden laurel Award was given to In Napoleon's Shadow, the first English language edition of the complete memoirs of LouisJoseph Marchand, valet and friend of the Emperor 1811-182 1. This work is published by Proctor Jones Publishing.
