In the little Dorset village of Piddlehinton there rests the body of Anne Winzer, who died there on 28th November 1873, aged 82 years. Her tombstone is engraved thus: She was a Waterloo hero who assisted at that dangerous battle AD 1815 by aiding and assisting the sick and wounded. She endured many hardships having followed the British Army from Brussels to Paris .... Returned to England and from thence to the Rock of Gibraltar where she remained 4 years. She afterwards resided in this parish where she received a pension through the instrumentality of Colonel Astell with that of many other officers by whose kindness this stone is raised as a tribute. [sic] This interesting snippet was sent to me by Paddy Pead, who discovered this gravestone whilst on holiday in the area. If any reader has a Waterloo veteran buried near them, with an interesting story attached, let me know. More Dusty Archive
