Wagram Museum This snippet of interesting news was sent to me by Dave Hollins: The Austrians are gradually becoming more interested in our period and the Gemeinde of Deutsch Wagrarn in particular is keen to exploit the tourist potential of the largely undamaged site of Napoleon's last great victory. As a replacement for the very small old one, the new Wagram Museum has just been opened in the building that housed Archduke Charles' headquarters in the village during the battle. Positioned by the main road junction, where the roads running south and east mark the main battlelines, the building itself is thus worth a visit just for its historic significance, and it is only a short walk to the Sachenklemme and the Russbach ridge. Inside are exhibited many artifacts from the battlefield in welllit cases, as well as representative paintings and later memorabilia - only the French uniform and some buttons are a little suspect. There are also some small dioramas and an additional room, representing the general history of the area, includes plans of the villages drawn a few years after the battle. Plenty of interesting material in a still perhaps too small a space, but a helpful introduction to this enormous battlefield. The Curator, Herr Derbic, is very friendly and helpful.
