Low Cost Hills

by Scott Mingus

1. Obtain scrap blueboard or Dow pinkboard (extruded polystyrene) from a new home construction site. Often these can be obtained simply by asking a crewmember. Otherwise, you will need to purchase a sheet of this from your home improvement supply store or lumberyard.

2. Using a retractable safety knife or similar cutting tool (or hot foam wire cutter) cut various shapes for your hills (kidney shapes, ovals, longer extended ovals for ridges, etc.).

3. Smooth the edges by cutting away the diagonals and sanding the resulting slope.

4. Higher hills may be made by stacking various sizes of hill sections and gluing them together.

5. Mark the location of any roads that will cross the hills.

6. Apply green paint liberally to the hill surface, and then heavily dust the hill with various Woodland Scenics or similar flocking (fine turf / static grass / etc.). Allow to dry overnight.

7. Paint the roads brown, and sprinkle Woodland Scenics fine brown turf onto the surface. Allow to dry.

8. Dust off the excess turf from the model hills by gently tapping them.

9. Apply any bushes by adding foliage clumps.
