Introduction
By Jim Purky
In April 1994 I had the opportunity to visit the battle field of Maxen as part of the Christopher Duffy Tour, and seeing as it was an utter disaster for Frederick the Great, I chose to put it out of my mind. Unfortunately, Professor Duffy revived all of my bad memories by giving an excellent presentation of the campaign and battle during his most recent visit to the US in order to attend the annual SYWA convention in South Bend. This article consists of notes taken from that lecture, augmented by some background material from modern sources. The exceptional maps and order of battle are provided by Paul Dangel. There is one rather curios aspect about Maxen, and that is the fact that no one can seem to find an order of battle for the Austrians. If anyone knows where to find said OB, kindly forward the information to the editor. Illustration at right: Prussian infantry drag a 3-pound battalion gun into action. Note the relative size of the wheels compared to the men. Picture comes from Ranoniere, Bombardiere, Pontoniere by Martin Guddat. More Maxen Back to Seven Years War Asso.
