7. Chasing the Deer (Movie)

Member Michael Parker of the UK writes to tell us that there is a new movie about Culloden and the Jacobite Rebellion scheduled for release in the UK around Christmas 1994. Perhaps one of the members can give us a review if they happened to see it.Here is a small newspaper clipping that Michael sent in about the movie:

"Brian Blessed stars in Graham Holloway's account of the events leading up to the slaughter on Culloden Moor in 1745, which left the retreating Highland clans broken and ended the hopes of the Young Pretender. Despite some uneven moments, this is often a vivid and telling portrayal of one of the most tragic events in Scotland's history. "

8. Like Hungry Wolves; Culloden Moor 16 April, 1746

This is the long-awaited book by Stuart Reid, with eight full-page color uniform plates by Gerry Embleton, whose illustrations have graced many an Osprey book.This is a large coffee-table sized book of 128 pages and numerous black and white pictures and highly detailed maps, all for $39.00. I found my copy at the Emperor's Headquarters in Chicago [see their ad on the back cover for their telephone number and address] . This appears to be a sort of " everything you always wanted know to about the Jacobite Rebellion" book and is well worth the cost if you have an interest in this period as either a historian or a wargamer. There is much detail on the composition and equipment of the Jacobite army and appears to be a valuable source book for this conflict.

9. The Austrian Army 1740-80 (Part I Cavalry) and (Part 2 Infantry); by Osprey Books;

It is great to see that Osprey is devoting some considerable attention to the 18th Century, first with three books devoted to the Prussian Army, and now, the first two books about the Austrian Army. There will be a third book devoted to Austrian Specialist Troops, in a manner similar to the Prussian series, available in May 1995. Both books are written by Philip Haythornthwaite with illustrations by Bill Younghusband. The illustrator's name is new to me, but I like his drawings very much. They are a big improvement over the color plates found in the older, out of print book done by Seaton. Both books are paperback with 48 pages and including 8 color plates.The cavalry book covers cuirassiers, dragoons, cheveau-legers, horse grenadiers, hussars, and Grenz cavalry units. Plenty of information on unit organizations, equipment, unit inhabers (colonels) etc, enhanced by loads of black and white drawings, many of which are familiar. The infantry book has a similar format and covers German, Hungarian and Grenz infantry. Again, plenty of information on tactics, organization, inhabers and equipment. Quite a bargain for $11.95 per book, available at the usual book outlets like EHQ, Articles of War and other military book dealers.

10. Plassey 1757; Clive of India's Finest Hour (Osprey Campaign Series No. 35)

Peter Harrington authors a book that must have Tod Kershner, a.k.a. " the only person in North America with SYW India campaign armies," drooling with delight. This comprehensive book on the SYW in India is 98 pages chock full of 3-D battle maps, color uniform plates and orders of battle. Anyone with even a passing interest in the SYW in India will want to add this book to their library. Cost is $14.95.

11. Die Osterreichische Armee Im Siebenjahrigen Krieg by Lars Holger Thummler. , German text, published by Brandenburgisches Verlagshaus ISBN 3-89488-050-3; cost is DM98.00. This hardcover book was probably released in early 1994 and I happened to pick up a copy at the Berlinner Zinnfiguren store, Knesebeckstrasse 88, 10623 Berlin-Charlottenburg, Germany [Phone: 030-313-08-02] or fax 030-313-11-80. This particular volume features a color uniform plate, done in watercolors , for every Austrian infantry, cavalry, artillery and support service arms unit. I cannot read German, but it appears that someone drew these pictues shortly after the SYW, with the drawings done on a sort of brown kraft paper and bound in a booklet. This book features color photos of each page in the book. The names of every inhaber (colonel) of every regiment is hand written on the book sheet, so the pictures have the appearance of an artist's sketchbook. The pictures themselves are rather "cartoonish" in appearance, but they appear to be very accurate in terms of details, i.e. facing colors, hat pom-pons and side bobs, lace patterns, etcetera. This seems to be a rather comprehensive study of Austrian uniforms and would be an invaluable source of information for those readers who have an affinity for the " Good Guys ". If you are interested, then contact the store in Berlin at the address listed above, or call Bob Ruman at Articles of War:Skokie, Illinois [708-674 - 1823]

Late News Note: Bob does have copies in stock now @$65.00

12. Back Issues Available for SYWA Journal !

I have reprinted a number of back issues from Volume VI (No. 1, my first issue as editor; No. 4 The Jacobite Rebellion) and Volume VII (Nos. 1,2, & 3; note that No. 2 is the Ottoman "Special Issue"). These back issues are available at a cost of $6.00 per issue, including first class postage; all requests from outside North America should add an extra dollar for postage, also airmail. A limited number of back issues will also be kept at the Emperor's Headquarters in Chicago. See the EHQ advertisement on the back cover of this issue. Volume VI No. 1 has been in particular demand. This issue covers the background to the events leading up to the Silesian Wars and the SYW and would be of particular use to someone who is newly interested in 18th Century military history and wants to know how the SYW got started. Write to Jim Purky, 2521 Thayer Street, Evanston, IL 60201, USA. Checks accepted in US currency only. International requests can be paid in local currency equivalent, US dollars or international postal money orders.

13. Does anyone know if the Pen gel & Hurt books are still available?

Mark Mocarski called me the other night asking if I had any information on the availability of this fine series of uniform information books. Mark was looking for the book on the Swedish army. Hmmm, know there's an interesting subject for a future "special issue". If anyone has information on where to buy P&H books, then please drop me a note and I will put the news in the next available issue of the Journal.

14. SYW Books Available at Emperor's Headquarters

living within a 20 minute drive of EHQ is both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, I have a plethora of books and wargame materials available to me at an instant, but on the other hand, I often find it too tempting to resist the impulse to buy something. In order to save me from my inability to keep my pocketbook closed when I visit EHQ, I thought that I would offer the readers a small listing of some available SYW-related books available off the shelf at EHQ.So please help me to avoid temptation and buy the following items so that can not:

a) The Papers of Henry Bouquet (6 vols. ranging $30-55 per book. b) The War of the Austrian Succession by Reed Browning $45.00. c) Culloden & the '45 (paperback) by Jeremy Black $19.95. d) British Light Infantry in the 18th Century by Col. JFC Fuller (reprint by Terry Wise) $50.00. e) Memoirs of a French & Indian War Soldier 'Jolicoeur' Charles Bonin. (Heritage Books) $21.00. f) The Infantry of Frederick the Great ; The Cavalry of Frederick the Great -- 2 books; by Dorn & Engelmann , English Text $95.00 each. Color uniform plates of every Prussian regiment, an excellent source for painters and anyone with a general interest in Prussians. g) William Augustus Duke of Cumberland by Rex Whitworth $14. h) Russias Military War to the West by Christopher Duffy $59.00. i) The Fortress in the Age of Vauban & Frederick the Great Vol 2 by Christopher Duffy $35.00. j) The Track of the Wolf Series on F&I War Uniforms by Ted Spring. $7.00 each (paperback).Coloring book style line drawings chock full of information. Simplistic, but nice for the price. Series includes Rogers Rangers (Vol 1), The French Marines (Vol 2), Highlanders and Provincial Rangers (Vol 3), Spanish Colonial Infantry 1739-78 (Vol 4), and Indian Allies (Vol 6). These have lots of information about equipment, etcetera, so don't be put off by the format. k) Kolin : Frederick the Great's First Defeat June 18, 1757; board game by Clash of Arms Games. The price wasn't marked on the box, but I think it was approximately $45-50. Each game includes a rather detailed historical commentary by Christopher Duffy, i.e. new material, not a reprint from one of his books. Even if you don't play board games, this is a terrific reference source. The game maps are truly beautiful and would be of great assistance in setting up a game using miniatures. I hope to have someone review this game in a future issue. 1) Cranston Fine Art Prints: " Prussian Guards at the Battle of Leuthen (by Rochling) this 8" x 10" picture costs $19.50 and depicts the Guards (a.k.a. "Bad Guys") storming through a breach in the wall of the Leuthen churchyard. Very dramatic. EHQ stocks a number of Cranston prints on SYW and Napoleonic subjects that would enhance any study-library or wargame room. If you reside in Europe though, you are probably better off buying direct from Cranston in the UK. 15. The Army of Frederick the Great by Christopher Duffy. I am told by Professor Duffy that the manuscript for this updated version of his original book is completed and will be published by EHQ Press. John Brewster of EHQ advises that we can expect to see copies of this book by the summer of 1995, probably at Historicon. This long sought after book has been extensively revised, and updated with a significant amount of new material; so even if you are fortunate enough to have a copy of the original book, you will still want to obtain a copy of the new version. Duffy tells me that there are a number of errors in the original version, discovered during the course of subsequent research in the archives in Vienna and Berlin, and that he has changed his opinion about a number of things that appeared in the old book. For example, some of the Prussian Freikorps units are now believed to be the equal of the Austrian Croat light infantry. The battle maps will undoubtedly be improved and updated too. I am sure that everyone is looking forward to the release of this new book in 1995.
