Introduction

by by Jim Purky

Though I am now a retired editor of the SYWA Journal, I still have the occasional yen to put pen to paper and ramble on about wargaming and military history of the 18th Century. And while my wargaming interests have branched out into ACW, Napoleonics, American Revolution and Late Romans and the Dark Ages (yes, Late Romans and the Dark Ages), a tricorne hat and a long coat with colored facings and turnbacks still points the way to my favorite historical period: the mid-Eighteenth Century. So you can expect to see my musings on this topic in a regular column in this publication.

I have had a hard time coming up with a name for my new column. The one at the top of this page conjures up the image of a retired old gentleman (c'est moi) sitting in the back yard of Frederick the Great's famous palace, his foot resting on a gout stool, a sturdy cane in his left hand and a mint julep or some other appropriate fermented libation, in his right hand. All the while, said gentleman is watching the troops march by on parade, and after a few too many libations, shouting the hold Hanoverian war cry, "Gato, Gato", at the top of his lungs.

I digress though; I am still looking for a nifty name to put at the top of this page, so if anyone has any good ideas for a column title, then send them on to me, care of Jim Mitchell. Perhaps we can make a contest out of it and I can offer a copy of The Army of Frederick the Great as a prize for the winning entry.

I'd like to take care of one little housekeeping bit before proceeding, and that is that I have handed over my entire inventory of back issues for Volumes VI through X, along with the artwork for producing more copies, to our new editor. So if you would like to purchase any back issues, please submit your order to Jim Mitchell (see the table of contents page for more information on how to order back issues.)
