[Note: The regimental numbers come from Duffy and represent the order of seniority in the Russian army at the time of the SYW.] Russian Cavalry of the Rear Guard (with 3rd Division)
Nizhegorod Dragoons (Regiment #82) Serbian Hussars (Regiment #93) Hungarian Hussars (Regiment #94) "Heir Apparent" Cuirassiers (Regiment #62) Riga Horse Grenadiers (Regiment #69) Cavalry Note: the total strength of the rear-guard cavalry was 3,000 horse while the advance guard had approximately 4,000 horse, excluding the Cossacks attached to the advance guard. Thus the total regular cavalry strength was 7,000 horse in 15 regiments. Dorn & Englemann cite 46 squdrons, which averages out to about 3 squadrons per regiment, not including Cossacks. There may have been as many as 7,000 Cossacks, but few of these actually took part in the battle, except for some Don Cossacks attached to the vanguard. Artillery Note: The field artillery batteries of the 2nd Division were attached to the advance guard of Sybilsky as the Russians advanced though the Norkittner Wald on the morning of August 30, 1757. The 2nd Division was supposed to follow behind the 1st Division, but emerged from the woods ahead of the 1st Division and found themselves facing the right wing of the Prussian infantry attack without their divisional batteries. Duffy gives the Russians a total of 260 pieces of artillery. Dorn &Engelmann break the artillery down to 154 regimental guns, 30 secret howitzers and 79 field guns. or a total of 263 guns. Infantry Note: Duffy gives the Russians an infantry strength of 90 battalions while Dorn & Englemann cite a strength of 89 battalions. Using the Prussian General Staff Russian OB, I counted 27 musketeer regiments, 3 grenadier regiments and 1 combined grenadier regiment. There were 5 regiments attached to the vanguard, for which Duffy gives a strength of 15 battalions. Therefore I am assuming that musketeer regiments had 3 battalions in the field. If we assume 2 battalions per grenadier regiment, then the grand total is 89 battalions. Therefore, the battalion strengths shown in this order of battle are estimates. Some regiments could have 3 battalions and some could have 2 regardless of whether or not they are musketeer or grenadier regiments. More Gross Jagersdorf Back to Seven Years War Asso.
