Napoleon's Shield and Guardian: The Unconquerable General Daumesnil by Edward Ryan (Hardback, ISBN 1-85367-553-9, £18.99) will be published in August. This outstanding biography is the story of courage. It charts the career of a superbly brave cavalryman against the rise and fall of his imperial master. Pierre Daumesnil was loyal follower of Napoleon and accompanied the Emperor as an officer of his chasseurs; his service record reflecting his years of experience on the field of battle. Daumesnil joined the French Army as a private in 1793 and was serving in Napoleon's Guides in 1797. He served in Egypt in 1798, charged at Marengo in 1800, fought at Austerlitz and Eylau, campaigned in Spain and saw action at Wagram. Terribly wounded in that battle and losing a leg, Daumesnil became governor of Vincennes and refused to surrender the fortress to the Allies in 1814 and again in 1815. November sees the publication of March of Death: Sir John Moore's Retreat to Corunna 1808-1809 by Christopher Summerville (Hardback, 1-85367-564-4, £18.99). Few dramatic episodes of British military history have been as dramatic as Sir John Moore's retreat to Corunna. In the bitter winter of 1808, a small British force found itself outnumbered and outmanoeuvred by a French army led by the Emperor Napoleon. Faced with crushing defeat, the British, commanded by Sir John Moore, turned and began a legendary march to freedom and escape. March of Death is the story of the terrible retreat through the eyes of those who were there and who survived. Christopher Summerville paints a vivid history of the retreat, and of the heroic climax in which the British turn and inflict a defeat on the pursuing French. More Napoleonic Newsdesk
