Battle of Aldenhoven /

Dutch During the
Revolutionary Wars Part 13

Introduction

by Geert van Uythoven, Netherlands

Finally, the description of the battle of Aldenhoven. Initially I believed that information about this battle would be scarce and difficult to find. As it worked out information was extensive and greatly varying. In addition the fighting was confused, and took place on an extensive battlefield. I tried to reconstruct the battle out of numerous sources, including eye-witness reports and those of local civilians. If sources differed greatly about certain essential aspects, I have mentioned that in the text.

When consulting French sources, if looking for the battaille d’Aldenhoven one will only find reference to another battle that took place at the same spot in 1794. The events in 1793 are in France commonly known as the ‘déroute d’Aix-la-Chapelle’, the ‘rout of Aachen’, relating to all events that happened on 1 and 2 March 1793. I would like to thank a number of people who were very helpful in my research for this article, clearing up inconsistencies and problems that arose, and being so kind to provide me with their opinions: Dave Hollins, Bruno Nackaerts, Winfried Romberg, Roland Kessinger, Alfred Umhey, John Cook, Marc Moerman, and Terry Crowdy.
