Prussian 25th Infantry Regiment

Sketch 7
Fusilier Leutnant 25IR
18 June 1815

by Peter Hofschröer, Austria

‘At this point Major von Witzleben exited the Chantelet wood with the Fusilier battalion of the 25th Regiment. It advanced towards the village of Caillou, threatening the right flank of the enemy battalions. The French Guards now retired with such haste that they did not return the 25th’s fire. Once they reached the main road the order maintained up until then broke down, confusion set in and they ran for their lives.’. From the Regimental History, Waterloo Campaign, Vol II p150.

This sketch was also inspired by one of Gerry Embleton’s drawings. Distinguished by his M1808 fusilier sabre and black belting, this fusilier officer wears the jacket with closed collar introduced in 1814, as well as the 1814 rank insignia. His shako, however, remains the pattern of 1808. Officers also wore a silver bullion sash, which has been deliberately omitted from the sketch. Even if this junior officer was able to afford such an expensive item, he would likely leave it at home or stow it safely in his knapsack.
