The Naval Academy was launched in October 2000 by the Royal Naval Museum, Portsmouth, to encourage the study of naval history. A range of lectures and seminars is offered each year, designed to appeal to those currently serving in the Royal navy and to those with an interest in the history and development of the Senior Service. Each seminar will start at 10.30am and finish at 4.00pm. The format will usually be of four lectures, each lasting about an hour, with a short plenary session at the end of the day. Admission to the whole Museum will be included in the price of the ticket. Two seminars may be of interest to the Napoleonic historian, although they present seminars on other periods of history, in particular 20th Century naval warfare. Saturday 10th November - W.L. Wyllie 2001 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of one of Britain’s leading maritime artists: W.L.Wyllie. This seminar will look at Wyllie’s reputation as an artist and at his close links with Portsmouth -including a guided visit to his masterpiece, The Panorama of the Battle of Trafalgar. Saturday 19th January 2002 -Charting the Seas The contribution made by the Royal Navy to the charting of the world’s oceans is one of the brightest pages in the long history of the Senior Service. This seminar will trace the development of the science from the days of Cook to the present. Each seminar costs £25 per person, £15 seniors, naval personnel, full-time students and unwaged. £12.50 for Museum Friends.
