The Battle Of
The Gohrde 1813

Wargaming

by John Walsh

This is an excellent game for wargamers, especially those with lots of trees. It offers the players an opportunity to use Prussians, Russians, Hanoverians and British troops (albeit only one battalion) and a rocket battery, in the same battle. Obviously, the French player would take on a defensive role, while the allied an attacking one, Perhaps one brave wargamer, controlling Pecheux's force, could take on two opponents playing the allies?

Reading

This article was inspired by John Salmon's piece in FE38. For some reason, after reading it, the article haunted me and I just had to find out more about the battle. However, this is not the heavily researched article I would have preferred it to be, due to a lack of time and other commitments. So anyone out there who knows something I haven't mentioned or can correct any errors, please write to FE and let us know.

Sadly, of the many varying accounts I came across, most were fairly short, questionable in authenticity and lacking in detail. For a more detailed description, and accounts of other combats during the 1813 campaign, I would highly recommend George Nafziger's NAPOLEON AT LEIPZIG, which also contains several detailed Orders of Battle. Also recommended, if you can get hold of a copy, is N. Ludlow Beamish's HISTORY OF THE KING'S GERMAN LEGION, which contains a lengthy account and is well worth looking at.
