"Die Vorgeschichte, Gründung und fröhe Entwicklung der Generalstäbe Österreichs, Bayerns und Preussens".
A companion volume to the above, this work covers the other end of the spectrum to that by Horstmann. Not only did the light infantry tactics of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars originate in Central Europe of the late 18th century, but also the general staff in the modern sense. Hackl traces the origins of the development of the general staffs of Austria, Bavaria and Prussia from the founding of the staff as the army's administrator in the 17th century to its evolution into the army's brain by the end of the 18th century. This work is of a similar high standard to that of Horstmann and as such deserves its place in the library of every serious Napoleonic enthusiast. More Reader's Reviews
