The Vosges mountains, France 28th October 1944

By late October, the US was pushing toward the Westwall. An
aggressive advance by the 36th Infantry Division began to
breach the German’s defensive line. On October 23rd, while
advancing through heavily wooded terrain, the 1st battalion of the 141st Infantry Regiment was overrun by a locai counterattack and trapped 3 km behind enemy lines. By the 26th they
were out of food and water and ammunition was critically low.
By October 28th, they were awaiting rescue or annihilation.
