An On To Richmond Scenario

Introduction

Researched By Ken Lewis

Before I begin the actual scenario I would like to take this opportunity to say why I enjoy using On To Richmond (OTR) rules. OTR allows me to play large scale major battles not possible with some sets of rules. The rules are simple, fast moving, and FUN!! The fact that OTR can be learned in one game is a plus for introducing new players to the American Civil War. One other nice thing is that you don't have to rebase your figures to use these rules since basing for such rules sets as "Johnny Reb" and "Rally Round The Flag" are quite compatible with OTR. Those of you who have remounted entire armies to use a new rules set know what I'm talking about. My own figures are based for "Rally Round The Flag" (RRTF), which is also a good gaming set. I use those rules for small scale battles such as Kernstown, a fun scenario published last year in THE ZOUAVE. I have never read or played "Johnny Reb" (JR) , but I know that JR is quite popular and is a good rules set.

Both JR and RRTF have the same figure ratio; 1 figure = 20 men and 1 gun model = 1 section. This ratio is perfect for battles with one or two divisions per side. However, if I were to use RRTF or JR for the Little Round Top scenario it would require for the Confederate player 675 foot figures and 36 gun model3. The Union player would need 1140 foot figures and 42 guns. Obviously, only large clubs could supply this many figures. In conclusion, limiting yourself to only one rules set limits the scenarios you can play. OTR would not be a good choice for playing the Kernstown scenario, while RRTF and JR would be unsuitable for the re-fighting Little Round Top.

The enclosed scenario for the battle of Little Round Top is a simplified version of the battle which took place on the afternoon of July 2, 1863. The Brigade combat values (CV's) and the commander ratings are my own opinion. Feel free to make any changes or roll off the charts for all units and commanders.
