Review by John Bryant
Close on the heels of his debut with the Confederate infantry late last year, MARK FENLON MINIATURES has released his next wave of 'large' 28mm figurines. This time, he offers Union Cavalry as well as a special vignette. First up are the Union Cavalry figures. Boy, if there are any troopers that would have made General She ' ridan proud, these are the ones. There are 2 packs of the cavalry for now. One is a pack of 5 troopers (ACW30), the second is a command pack of 3 (ACW31): Officer, Bugler & Guidon Bearer, shown on this page. In size, they're true 28mm, and they fit in proportionally with the Fenlon infantry, unlike some other manufacturers that make the horse and/or rider smaller, as if they were ponies. Not this sculptor. His riders actually fit on the horses (which can be a novelty, especially with another brand of large 25mm ACW figures). Also, Mark did not mold the reins which was fine with me since I was able to attach some of my wife's cross- stitch thread to the figure. It really finishes things off nicely, and will be welcomed by most gamers, and especially the figure painter/modeler. He leaves a place to drill under the horse's chin allowing a nice path for the thread from the horse to the rider's hands. Mark states that one of his primary reasons for doing these miniatures was to have them as proportionally correct and relative to the size of the man, the horse, the equipment and/or the weapons. My collection is almost devoid of Union cavalry ... I feel that will change quite soon. Finally, recognize the scene at right? Mark has modeled a vignette, that he calls 'States Rights', after the famous Matthew Brady period photo. The 3 figures come with a base with molded logs, plus slots for the feet. Some minor assembly is necessary but easy to do. Overall, they're all wonderful, cle an & affordable castings from a welcomed newcomer to the 28mm ACW gaming/modeling hobby. See Mark's ad in this issue for pricing and other particulars. Please note that he can process credit card payments now. Keep on sculpting, Mark Fenlon. Mark Fenlon Miniatures
