The Russian Conflagration of 1812

Napoleon's Memoirs

by Russ Lockwood

Well the first thing was the huge traffic jam of French which needed to be dispersed. I tried not to peek at the other tables so I worked it as though I was coming in blind. I was not sure whether scouts were allowed in the game but I guess I should have asked.

1) My primary objective was Riga. 2nd Objective Smolensk. Did not want to jam eveything in the Center. It would have been to obvious. (Marsh to the South was bad stuff)

2) Joe was to cross the River near the town of Jakapils and either come behind Riga or begin moving East on the main road. Then he would swing south to Smolensk..With me behind him...if I took Riga.

3) Keith was to take Vilnius and then sweep in a North-Easterly direction, protecting Joe's corps. (covering for myself)

4) Fred was to help Keith and/or protect the Center.

5) Eugene's Corp was called first turn to pin the center.

6) The reserve was to assist the center where applicable, and be available for other players coming late.

I was thinking that Riga would be very lightly defended. As I brought in the 4 corps going up toward Riga (Michael was there), a small corp was present. Thinking I can take him out quickly (which I almost did), he retreated back into the town (after some advice from his co-players). I tried bombarding Riga with my grand battery, but it was to no avail. I moved away to assist Joe's corps. Swinging below him. I came across John's Russian Corp and sent him retreating .

I then received word from Fred that he needed help and told him to take Eugene's Corps. Found out then Vilnius was taken.
