Old San Juan

Cathedral of San Juan

article and photos by Russ Lockwood

We spent the better parts of two days exploring Old San Juan. That's about what you need to spend to see the city and partake of some of its cultural offerings.

The Cathedral, looking towards the altar.

The Cathedral is located on Christos Street. A small plaza, reached by three or four steps, leads up from the sidewalk, and the cathedral proper is up another few steps more. It's not exceptionally large. Indeed, I've been in churches that have been larger, but it's still magnificent to see and worth taking 15-20 minutes to walk around inside.

On the right are smaller chapels to various saints.

The entry to one of the smaller chapels.

On the left are various altars.

Of notable interest is the tomb of Ponce de Leon, whose remains were interred here in 1913. A marble frieze marks the spot.
