Very Slow: (165K)
by Russ Lockwood
Postcard from the Phil Viverito Collection
In this postcard, the pedastal for the lighthouse lens is still visible on the "castle" -- today it is removed. The wooden shed building on the right is no longer there. Note the castle has a vestibule, which is plainly removed in the 1926 photos. The house in the foreground has been removed as well, although a newer house was constructed to the left of the illustration, about where the trees start. The current parking lot starts about where the house inthe postcard ends, in foreground. The station in the background is today lower at left, off photo, virtually on the river, not next to the castle as it appears in the postcard. The sally port and casemates at right in the brick-faced wall remains. Also note that the entrance was through the sallyport. The current entrance is via a wooden drawbridge and through a "gatehouse" at left, by the south redoubt. The angle of the brick wall was removed for access and construction of the gatehouse.
