Do You Really Want to Get
Into The Hobby Business?

Introduction

by Rudy Scott Nelson

I decided to write this article based on some questions and comments that I have read on various message Boards such as the one found on ‘The Miniature’s Page’ website. The information found in this article is not new or profound. It is just facts and concepts that people need to consider before they start of possibly expensive and risky venture.

One issue is to whether to address all of the issues per business type or cover each issue individually. Well it will be a mix of both but I will try to discuss the pros and cons of each business type. However, those issues that are common to all will be covered as an issue section. I have added some poster quotes from topics on ‘The Miniatures Page’ board. They are listed by the posting name and not their real name

Discussion Of Considerations/Issues By Business Type

Choosing the right business type is the first decision to be made.

Scurvey Barnell III posted the following question. It is an example of some of the possible alternatives but not all. “…What aspect of the hobby offers the most opportunity to make a decent living from?

    A. Running a store
    B. Painting service
    C. Ebay store
    D. Game and figure design
    E. Running a hobby related webpage
    F. Something I haven’t mentioned or a combination of the above….”

As he stated these are only some of the options. Other options include:

    G. Running a distributorship, either importing, domestic or both
    H. Becoming a Producer (manufacturer)
