Plains Indians Colors for Uniforms

by Rudy Scott Nelson

Many who paint native Nation castings often like to know what colors were the most common in a particular region of the country.

In the Plains area, dyes and paint were made from processing minerals and plants. Common colors were yellow, red and gray-black (charcoal). White was available but is not mentioned as being used a lot. There is evidence of blue and green being available from copper ore but most cultural history of Plains tribes does not recognize their frequent use.
