Latin American Wars
of Independence

Bibliographic Appendix

by Rudy Scott Nelson

The El Dorado magazine often contains articles on the Independence Wars. In addition over the past few decades, other magazines have contained a few articles on the subject. Also I am sure that there are a large number of sources written in Spanish. Unfortunately, I along with most other gamers am unable to read the language in order to conduct any meaningful research. I am the first to admit that this article is not complete nor without error. Obtaining additional data and verification of facts was very difficult. Some sources mention battles but give no dates or participation information. Other sources vary by a few days on the date in which a minor event occurred.

Finally in regards to uniform information, there are also variations in facts given including the identification of specific units. With these limitations in mind, here is a very limited bibliography of English written or translated resources.

As stated earlier the "El Dorado" magazine is devoted to historical issues involving Spanish speaking countries and armies. Their articles on this era tend to focus on the hard to obtain information about uniforms and flags of the period.

“The Vice Royalty of Rio Plata and Argentina” by David Prando, ‘El Dorado’ v9 #1.
“Independence from Spain: the Quito Campaign” by Charles Bogart and Terry Hooker, ‘El Dorado’ v7 #2.
“Troops Under the Command of Bolivar: Peru 1823” by Terry Hooker, ‘El Dorado ’ v1#4.
“Uniforms of Gran Columbia, 1814-1826” by Terry Hooker, ‘El Dorado’ v1#1.

Other magazine articles include:
"The Andean Liberation Army" by the Marquez-Allison brothers, published in two parts in the "Campaign" magazine, issues thirty-nine and forty.
"The Spanish Royalist in South America: 1814-25" by David Sweet. I only have a copy but I think that the article was published in the "Little Wars" magazine of the late 1970s. It had some good data on uniforms and fifteen good bibliographic sources.
"Uniforms of Bolivar's Army 1813-30 by Rene Chartrand. This is a good article from the Feb 1983 issue of "Military Modeling" magazine.
"Latin American Wars of Independence" by Terry Hooker, from the "Sword & Lance" issue #13. A focus on the uniforms used in the New Grenada theatre.
"Bolivar's British Legion" by Ian Fletcher. I only have a copy but the article ends with a "MI" notation, so I assume that it was printed in the 1990s by "Military Illustrated".

English Language books about the military aspects of the Latin American Wars of Independence are:
The Armies of Bolivar and San Martin by Terry Hooker and Ron Poulter (artwork), Osprey Press, Men At Arms series #232. It is a concise resource that includes data on uniforms and orders of battle.
The History Atlas of South America by Edwin Early, Macmillan Press.
Liberators by Robert Harvey, The Overlook Press, 2000. It contains a good narrative about the progress of events. The descriptions of battles are detailed. My only concern is an a researcher he is weak on providing the exact dates on which minor battles occurred.
The Spanish American Revolutions 1808-26 by John Lynch, Norton Press. This work is a good college textbook containing valuable background material on Latin America.
