This chronology covers from the time of the Mongol withdrawal of its garrisons from Korea until 1700. 1340s Korean revolts force the removal of Mongol garrisons. 1350-1389 Several campaigns are conducted by Koryo Generals including Ch'oe Yong,Yi Somggye, Ch'oe Mu-son against Jurchen tribes and various Chinese rebels 1359 Koryo defeat warlord armies ,Red Turbans, from China in Northern Korea 1361 Koryo defeat warlord armies , Red Turbans, from China in Northern Korea 1388 MING China threaten Koryo over sheltering of rebel remnants. Koryo orders General Yi Song-Gye to invade China. He revolts and overthrows the Koryu Dynasty. The Yi Dynasty is established. 1419 Yi dynasty under King T'aejong successfully attack the Japanese islands of the Tsushima province. The goal is to destroy the bases of the Japanese pirates which are guarded by Samurai and Ashigaru of the local daimyo. 1500s Numerous raids by Jurchen tribes into Korea from Manchuria 1555 Serious raids by Japanese Pirates against the province of Cholla 1583 Jurchen Yain tribes living in northern Korea revolt and begin serious local raiding. Korean troops under Sin Ip defeat the Yain after several battles. 1590's Manchu tribes raid into northern Korea 1592-98 THE JAPANESE INVASION OF KOREA. Japanese forces under Shogun Hideyoshi invade Korea with the goal of establishing a base of operations from which they can launch and invasion of China. Japanese elements advance across the Tumen River into Manchuria. Korean resistance focuses on Japan's supply and communications line by using guerilla activities and naval sorties. The war ends when Hideyoshi dies in 1598. 1592 ~April 160,000 Japanese troops invade southern Korea. Local Generals defend the beacheads until death. Japanese troops divid3e into three columns and advance up the peninsula. 1592 ~May Battle of Ch'ungju. Korean army under Sin Ip is defeated by the Japanese central column south of Seoul. First serious effort by the Koreans. King flees Seoul and asks MING China (50,000 men) for aid. 1592-1593 Koreans deployed armored galleys (Turtleboats) under Admiral Yi Sun-sin. These ships devastate Japanese warships and supply vessels At the battles of Okp'o, Tanp'o, Tanghangp'o, Hansan Island and near Pusan. These losses eventually force the Japanese to give up their gains and retreat to the Pusan area. 1592-1593 The THREE Battles of CHINJU. Japanese forces are repulsed in their first attempt to capture Chinju. The Japanese capture the town in their second assault. Eventually the Korean forces including guerrilla forces recapture the town after a bloody assault. 1593 Siege of HAENGJU. General Kwon Yul defends the mountain fortress located near Seoul for months until the Japanese retreat. Numerous assaults are repulsed. 1592-1593 Korean rebels under Ko Kyong-myong and Kim Ch'on-il revolt against Japanese garrisons in Cholla Province. Suwan is actually captured by the rebels. 1592-1593 Korean rebels under Kwak Chae-u revolt against Japanese garrisons in Kyongsang Province. Chinju fortress is captured by the rebels. 1592-1593 Korean rebels under Cho Hon revolt against the Japanese and capture Ch'ongju. 1592 July MING China assault on Pyongyang is defeated and a siege began. 1593 January MING China attack on Pyongyang is successful 1593 Battle of Pyokchegwan. MING China follows the Japanese force from Pyongyang toward Seoul but is defeated by the Japanese in a massive set battle. 1593 Battle of KUMSAN. A major battle between Japanese and Korean troops + Korean rebels. Several notable rebel leaders are killed. 1593 February Japanese retreat to a fortified stronghold on the southern coast. 1593-1596 Truce established which allows the MING to shift forces to defend against Manchu attacks into China. 1597 A second massive invasion by Japanese troops. A better prepared Korean army stops the Japanese advance. Numerous battles are fought mainly in the Kyongsang province. Also the Korean turtleboats wreak havoc among the Japanese fleet. . 1598 Shogun Hideyoshi dies this year. The Japanese withdraw from Korean soil. 1616 Korean auxillary force (10,000) sent to aid the MING against the Manchus in Manchuria. The Korean commander declines to fight and surrenders. 1624 Yi Kwal revolts against the recent placement of Injo as king. His faction is defeated after a bitter struggle and he flees to Manchuria. 1627 First major Manchu invasion of the northern Korean peninsula. The Manchus send 30,000+ troops to support the exiled Yi Kwal. The Manchus captured isolated villages but halt before fortified towns. A peace is signed so the Manchus can shift their forces for an invasion of China. 1636 Second major Manchu invasion of Korea results in the capture of the royal family and forces them to change vassal support from the MING to the MANCHUS. 1654-1658 RUSSIAN-MANCHURIAN CONFLICT. Korean auxiliary troops are sent to help the Manchus combat intrusians by Russians along the Amur River. Chosun: The Isolationists of East Asia
