The Cristinos troops carried the standards associated with the regular army units which they were assigned. The regiment's first battalion carried the Colonel's color, which had an elaborate design of crowns, arms of Spain, etc. in the center printed over the Burgundy Cross. Regimental colors had a white field with a jagged red cross of Burgundy. The Crowns were gold and red, with multicolored jewels. The elaborate corner ovals were surrounded by draped flags or laurel wreaths. The 1st El Rey Rgt had a purple field. Provincial units carried flags like the regulars but lacked the elaborate corner ovals. National militia and perhaps some local town garrisons carried a flag with a red-gold-red horizontal stripe pattern. Additional slogans or designs may have also been added as desired.. Design examples are green Palm with laurel wreath and a yellow lion rampant. The Carlist Army, as can be expected from a rebel force carried a wide variety of flags based on the desires of the unit's commander and men. Some examples include black flags with various combinations of skulls and bones; White and red fields with various religious images on one or both sides and possibly a slogan on the other side. The Virgin Mary was a popular image. Spain's First Carlist War
