Uniform Notes on the
English Civil War

Scotland

by Rudy Scott Nelson

The Scots seemed to have preferred a Hodden Gray color for its uniformed troops. The Gray was a gray-brown but most color illustrations show a dark shade of gray. The gray was used for coats and pants. Leather equipment was buff or natural colored. There were reports of later regiments being uniformed in red from English supplied cloth. Also one regiment 'Minister's regiment' was clothed in black (used clergy garments ?). The traditional blue bonnet was found on almost every Scot soldier.

The Highland troops of this era had not yet developed the clan tartan identity. As a result the plaid colors among the Highland levies should be varied. The bodyguard of some Highland clan chiefs may have worn a tartan pattern similar to the chief. The arms of the Highland levies varied from bows and swords to a limited number of muskets.

A summary of Uniform Colors as Noted in various sources. For reasons listed earlier in the article, several units changed uniform colors based on the cloth/dye colors available or the preference of a new commander. A question mark (?) indicates that no conclusive data is available on the color OR various sources have different colors listed OR an assumption of color was made by a source due to the location that the unit was raised.
