Melees

Part I
Part II
Part III

1. The side declaring the melees is the "attacker" (A). He may charge from one sector into several individual melees, but each individual troop may only attack once per turn.

2. Each enemy held sector must be fought as one unit. It cannot be split up, nor can several sectors be combined in defense.

3. The first two ranks may melee troops in the adjacent sector, which they must be facing. DIAGONAL charges are NOT legal. Each troop has a combat value (CV) of "3", regardless of casualties on the tray.

4.The CV of a defending troop is "3" if attacked frontally, "2" if attacked from the rear, and "I" if attacked enfilade.

5.An OFFICER TRAY will add "3" to the total CV of the melee it is - fighting in. This is in addition to the normal CV of the tray.

6.A GENERAL adds "5" to the total CV of his troops, but he must be directly engaged in the melee.

7. The attacker does not have to declare melees, even if his troops are in position to charge. He may also withhold units from an attack.

8. Infantry cannot melee cavalry, except in towns or woods.

HOW TO FIGHT A MELEE:

A.Add the combat values of both sides engaged in a melee and compute the odds; round up in favor of the defender.

B.Roll 1 die and find the results in the appropriate odds column of the melee morale and casualty table.

MORALE:

The numerical digit indicates the morale of the attacking (A) and defending (D) troops.

0 = Both sides stand
-1 = Loser RETREATS into an adjacent sector of his choice. He must, if possible, move away from the attacker. (Retreated troops may be arranged at loser's option)
-2.3,4 = Loser ROUTS 2, 3, or 4 sectors. Limbered guns may route, team and all, while guns in firing position are abandoned.

NOTE:

The entire sector(s) of the loser must retreat or rout, not just the troops engaged in the melee. This applies also to the attacker, even if some troops in retreating sectors were or are to be engaged in other melees. At the end of the rout, the loser's troops must face in the direction of the rout (i.e. away from melee sector). It is permissible to rout or retreat through or into hostile zones of control. Troops running into enemy held sectors, or off the board, are eliminated.

+ 1,2,3,4 = Winner has the option to advance the equal number of sectors. The first sector entered must be the vacated one. Thereafter splitting up is permissible.

CASUALTIES: The capital letter indicates the casualties suffered by each side:

M = Medium casualties
0 = No casualties
H = High casualties
L = Light casualties
ELIM =All troops of losing side wiped out consult casualty factor chart. It takes 1 factor to remove an infantry or artillery man, 2 factors a cavalry man or general. Exception: A cavalry man will be killed by 1 single factor, if no infantry or artillery man is in the melee on his side.

DEFENSE BONUS: If the defending sector is hills, woods, town, building, siege gun, or if all attacking troops are on a brook sector or charging over a wall, select next odds column to the left.
