Yusef Salah-al-Din ibn Ayyub, continued his apprenticeship in command with a tough series of battles in the Medieval Warfare (MW) tournament at Fall-In (November 4th, 2000, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania). He scored well, but lost consistently to the Normans of Robert, the Duke of Eldridge (3-5), the Swiss of Burgermeister Sean Scott (2-3), and the Anglo-Normans of Alex, Earl of Aimette (4-5). The young Sultan's overall score of 9 points was an improvement over his previous showing (see "Saladin at Historicon", SAGA #76), but the tallies of his enemies (11, 11, and 14, respectively) amply demonstrated the increasing dangers attending those who would resort to Medieval Warfare to settle their differences. [Note to Don, Sean and Alex: I am writing this ca. 13 months after the fact, so please let me know about errors, etc., for speedy correction] The Ayyubid army was comprised as follows:
2 Generals HC L/B/Sh Elite (Trained) 1 Mamluk HC L/B/Sh Elite (Trained) 7 Toassin HC L/B/Sh Veteran (Trained) 7 Ghulam HC L/B/Sh Warrior (Trained) 8 Turkomans SC J/B/Sh Warrior 16 Sudanese Archers UI B/Sh Warrior(Trained) 6 Ghazis UI J/Sh or Ax/Sh Fanatic 1 Ammo Supply 1 Priest Since tournament players would for the first time be required to pay 25 points for a priest and the ever desirable "god-roll", the Ayyubids opted to forgo the upgrade of elite cavalry to FMC, thus obviating the choice of expensive Mamluks over cheaper Ghulams and Toassin.
