Battles for Miniatures
Part 1: Hastings

Introduction

by Gary Comardo

This is an introduction to a series of actual ancient battles for miniature wargames scenarios. Each issue I will attempt to include one or more battle situations based on an actual engagement of ancient times. These battles will usually by necessity be scaled down as per numbers (Hastings, for instance, is based on one figure equals forty actual combatants) of figures used. Also, in order to recreate the battles, it will often be necessary also) to substitute whatever figures are available to the players. As long as they are correctly based and armed, this makes it possible to play virtually any scenario using, any substitute armies.

This section of the newsletter, like all others, is open to the readers and subscribers to send in any of their own favorite scenarios. The only criteria are: must be researched as to forces involved, a map with initial positions provided, and the armies broken down into forces as per WRG or Shock of Impact Army Lists. I hope to see a varied selection of battle situations covering the whole spectrum of ancient times which we may be able to incorporate into a booklet for subscribers and clubs. Also, the battle reports using these situations will be published in the newsletter. Future scenarios which will be presented so far include: Metaurus--2nd Punic War; the Battle of the Indus--Alexander and Porus; Stamford Bridge--Vikings and Saxons; and the Battle of the Standard--Scots versus English. Now on to this issue's situation; the Battle of Hastings.
