The English Civil War

Awash in Games: A Busy Weekend

54mm figures

The sequence for the half-bound had 8 phases:

    1. Active Side sees which of its units have loaded muskets. Each missile unit has 60 percent chance to load weapons.
    2. Active Side moves its troops. All troops move 10 inches
    3. Non-Active Side fires its weapons using the "Fire Deck"
    4. Active Side has all units which loaded weapons in Phase 1, fire
    5. Non-Active Side moves cavalry, 10 inches
    6. Resolve melee
    7. Troops rally from Rally Zone
    8. Determine effect of casualty figures received during firing and melee phases.

In Phase 3, the Fire Deck consisted of 13 cards... 3 'misfires', 5 'fire', and 5 'load'. The Non-Active Side drew either 6, or 5, or 4 cards, and tried to match up pairs of 'fire' and 'load' cards. One volley was permitted for each matched pair. Hence it was possible that, with a 6-card draw, a side could volley three times... not likely, but still possible. The other fire phase (Phase 4) did not use the Fire Deck, but simply had the units with loaded weapons fire.

On Phase 8, each casualty figure placed on a unit during the previous phases counted for 30 percent. Percentage dice were thrown, and the result was that either one or two men would zip into the off-board Rally Zone.

Note that on the next half-bound, during Phase 7, the men placed in the Rally Zone would attempt to recover.
