Paddy Griffith for Greenhill

Big Paddy (the Patron Saint of the Bearded Order of Wargames Developments) seems to have settled down to a life of producing syntheses of other historians' work. In this case he draws on a number of excellent works to produce something which is entertaining as well as informative. Not quite in Duffy's (apparently) effortless style, Paddy will always want to be a disruptive boy, but getting there. As in any Revolution some interesting specimens will float free and there are some very interesting ones here. Paddy's argument seems to be that the Friends of the Corsican have "done down" the Revolutionary period to make their own hero appear the better for it. Paddy argues much that is thought "revolutionary" was established in the 1790s. Indeed he further argues that the Way of War of the Ancien regimes was pretty much still Best Practice, and that the Revolutionaries sought to return to it where circumstances and dogma permitted. The book covers all the main bases and read in conjunction with Blanning and Lynn should set you off. A good read.
