In Morocco with General D'Amade Reginald Rankin

This six-volume reprint covers General d'Amade's operations in the Chaouiya (the contado of Casablanca). D'Amade had been with the British Army in South Africa (so his compatriots called him "D'Amade in England" in what the film Ridicule would doubtless call wit). The Chaouiya was an area of great agricultural value subject to constant tribal warfare (or so Mr Rankin believes) and as a result its major crop was flowers described, rather incongruously, very movingly. The sundry tribes inspired by xenophobia (cunningly disguised as religion) were determined to give the Frenchies a whipping but facing a 75mm artillery and the Lebel magazine rifle they found blind bravery was not enough. Their usual tactic, sudden attack by masses of infantry and cavalry, was as if the Pathans of 1840 had learned to ride and attacked the Indian Army in 1905 - a Horrid Slaughter akin to Omdurman. Douglas Porch's account makes the comings and goings a good deal more indecisive than does Rankin, but then Rankin was there and Porch was not. If only we could get Phil Englund to read this with its marches, counter-marches and flora and fauna it would make a good piece alongside Panch Villa. This is very atmospheric stuff indeed.

The Battle of Vionville Colonel A.E. "Anthea" Turner

This is a good sharp account of the battle for someone who wants to get to the issues of Mars-La-Tour without too much scribbling. You will need a map if you are to follow the action or a copy of Deathride). The account was delivered as a lecture (in 1894) to the Dublin Society, and the discussion of the officers (including Lord Wolseley) afterwards makes fascinating reading. The abiding fascination of cavalry to the military mind is manifest, to those of us used to seeing cavalry fall in heaps before the guns it appears almost obsessive.
