Part 3
By Lion's Den Wargamers
Following the dream sequence two of our intrepid British Admirals where caught in the "triangle" and did not return to the game sequence set in the West Indies. Their characters became deathly sick and where sent by ship back to England to recuperate. These captains' careers had ended in the British West Indies Theater but where to resume in the Indian Ocean under the campaigns of Suffren and Hughes. This is an original focus of our clubs Wooden Ships and Iron Men campaign. The goal is to play out all of the scenarios or history provided by the game Wooden Ships. However, we soon realized that for the role playing aspects we enjoyed we would need to have a quick and easy set of ship to ship combat rules and not the overly cumbersome WSIM setup. We needed to shift quickly between role playing and character story line to the ship battles and the record keeping needed in WSIM was too much work and the turn sequence was long and tedious. Now all of our player's ships will fit on one sheet of paper and the turn sequence is so smooth its like sailing through a game. We use a set of rules that we call Full Sail because of the sturdy resemblance to the Ship to ship future game that is on the market (As easy as Full Thrust). Our rules are based on Brother Aelred Gliddens As Per Margin rules with enough house rule tweaks to warrant a new name. The dream sequence was an interesting way to separate the players into two groups. What I wanted was a way to hold a naval battle game in an evening without all the character and map movement that carries our campaign so successfully, just a simple story line that would bring two fleets to battle. The WSIM series of battles featuring Suffren and Hughs are perfect. All I needed was to get several of our Admirals to accept commands in this far-flung theater of the American Revolution. The method of selection was the dream sequence games featured in the two previous issues of The Penny Whistle. Any captain getting sunk or killed in the Triremes game would fall ill and return to England in the Full Sail Game and their careers would resume in the WSIM Suffren and Hughes game. All still played under our Tweaked copy of As Per Margin/Full Sail. Aren't Wargames cool? The freedom to play with story lines and grab relevant history and rules mechanics is one of the best things about this hobby. Thanks for listening. Daydream Believer Part 1
