British Frigate,
German Submarine Collide

Alert

Reports From Reuters

LONDON, Jan 25 (Reuter) - A German submarine was flooded on Wednesday in a collision with a British frigate during cat-and-mouse war games in the English Channel. No one was injured but two torpedo tubes and a ballast tank on the U-14 submarine were damaged by the frigate's propeller, a Royal Navy spokesman said.

The 500-tonne submarine was at periscope depth when the collision with the 4,400-tonne HMS Battleaxe occurred off the southern English coast. The submarine was able to surface and return under its own power to the British naval base at Portland. British and German authorities liaised on an inquiry into what caused the collision.

Battleaxe, specifically designed for antisubmarine operations, saw action both in the 1982 Falklands conflict against Argentina and the 1991 Gulf War, when its Lynx helicopters carried out missions against Iraqi vessels.
