Harpoon Scenario:
Red Maelstrom

NATO

by Chris Carlson and Michael W. Harris

NATO Operational Situation: All major NATO units are either sunk, damaged, or committed to the main fight north in the Norwegian Sea. The East German/Polish and West German naval forces have obliterated one another in the Baltic and Soviet air forces and NATO air and naval air forces have been severely mauled in mutually destructive clashes. The only NATO group available to meet the inbound Soviet Task Force is the reconstituted STANAVFORLANT.

Tactical Situation: The Soviet formation is emerging from the Kattegatt at 1200 hours on a west/northwest course. Norwegian coast watchers report the force to be at least two cruisers with a screen of frigates or destroyers.

NATO Naval Forces: STANAVFORLANT II

Argonaut (UK Exocet Leander-class FF)
Voge (US Garcia-class FF)
Overijssel (Neth Friesland-class FF)
Peder Skram (Denm Peder Skram FF)

NATO Orders: Intercept and attack the Soviet Naval Force. Inflict as much damage as possible, especially to any Soviet cruisers. Use emission control (EMCON) to avoid detection as long as possible.

NATO Victory Conditions:
Decisive: All Soviet cruisers are sunk or crippled (damaged greater than 50%) and no NATO frigate is sunk.
Tactical: All Soviet cruisers are sunk or crippled.

NATO Setup: Current intercept course is 085° at 22 knots. Formation is at player’s discretion, but all ships must be within visual signaling distance due to current EMCON restrictions.
