Red Maelstrom

Introduction

Location: North Sea, September 1980, 1300 hours local time.

HDMS Peder Skram - now a museum at Copenhagen.

Environment: Heavy haze with patches of denser fog. Visibility 25%. Sea state 4. Negligible wind (light and variable).

Background: World War III is five months old and NATO has fought the Soviets to a standstill. In an attempt to break the stalemate, the Soviets plan to punch out from the Baltic into the North Sea and hit the NATO Atlantic Fleet from behind. The only force NATO can scrape together to meet the Soviet attack as it emerges is the reconstituted STANAVFORLANT frigate squadron.
